Witches Falls Winery

Witches Falls owner and winemaker Jon Heslop has been actively involved in the wine industry since 1995 when he first began working for Orlando-Wyndham as a wine sales representative. While he has always had a passion for wine, it was during this time that he realised he wanted to take this passion further and become a winemaker.

With the decision made, Jon was determined to learn his craft. He packed up his family and moved them from Brisbane to the Barossa Valley to begin work as a cellar hand at Richmond Grove. From the Barossa it was on to the Hunter Valley in New South Wales where he worked as a winemaker for Tamburlaine Wines.

Living in the Hunter was great, but part of Jon’s plan had always been to move back to Queensland. So in 2003, and against the advice of many, Jon his wife Kim and their two children moved to Tamborine Mountain to establish their own winery. Witches Falls opened in August 2004.

The decision to locate a winery on Tamborine Mountain may have seemed strange to some but for Jon and Kim it was all part of the plan. The beautiful Gold Coast Hinterland is the ideal destination for visitors doing day trips from Brisbane and the Gold Coast yet close enough to the Granite Belt from where the majority of the grapes for Witches Falls wines are sourced.

Showcasing the fruit from the Granite Belt is a huge part of the Witches Falls ethos. Jon has always believed that the potential of the Granite Belt as a premium wine-growing region is much underestimated and, loving a challenge as he does, has set about trying to change this by making exceptional single varietal wines from this region that speak for themselves.
