The Broadbeach

Broadbeach Tavern/Liars Bar gets the makeover of the year.

There are some things in life that must be seen to be believed and what we’re about to share with you is one of those. You’ve no doubt noticed quite a bit of work going on in the middle of Broadbeach of late and, just in time for summer, the reason for that ruckus has been unveiled.

The Broadbeach recently emerged like a phoenix from the ashes of what was once much-loved drinking hole, Broadbeach Tavern (aka Liars Bar), in prime position at The Oasis Shopping Centre.

A familiar phrase that’s slung around when Broadbeach Tav is mentioned is “oh I’ve had some good nights there in my time”, and it’s true, there has indeed been many a good time had at the Broady Tav.

Which is something that will certainly continue, only now with more of a bright, summer holiday, take-the-kids-along-for-a-wholesome-family-dinner vibe. It’s a mind blowing transformation so let’s unpack it shall we.

First of all, it’s the perfect addition to the beachside centre and will no doubt be buzzing every day and night for the rest of time so hats off to the team. It’s due in large part to the oceany, good time feels they’ve managed to create with a spacious deck, lots of natural light, white exposed brick tables and the bar itself, wooden accents and fun feature tiles, plants hanging from the ceiling and pillars that both hold up the ceiling and are painted with tropical animals and jungle-type scenes. So many pretty things.

It’s open and airy and there are fresh flowers everywhere and it’s very much the new summer hangout of your dreams.

Of course, the menu has a whole new lease on life too and it’s exactly what you’ll want after a long day on the beach or to accompany an afternoon of tasty beverages on the deck with the crew.

There are plenty of share plates and starters including Beef Ragu and Mozzarella Arancini and Charcuterie Boards, which are two of our favourites things on Earth.

If you’re after something more substantial, that’s a-okay, there are plenty of delicious pizza and pasta options plus your favourite bar meal situations in the form of Taco Bowls, big old burgers, fish and chips and the like.

We would also HIGHLY recommend the Fig, Haloumi and Walnut salad because that is a combination for the ages.

The very best thing though is something known as the The Broadie Board which is made up of many tasty treats including Calamari, kaarage chicken (love you), arancini balls, baked brie, Amalfi prawns, oyster shooters, flatbread and dips. So all the best ones.

The dance floor is being prepped and will open in three weeks so you’ll have everything you need, right in the one sweet little space.

Props Broady Tav, it was lovely knowing you but The Broadbeach is where it’s at.

Harajuku Gyoza

“Irasshaimase” is the greeting you’ll hear happily called in your direction every time you set foot in the newly opened beer stadium and dumpling bar in Broadbeach, Harajuku Gyoza.

And the fun doesn’t stop there. The space is decked out in the restaurant’s signature style with huge arched entryways, their famous decorative plates perched across the back wall depicting Japanese movie scenes and the wide, Manga-style face of the Harajuku Gyoza logo smiling out at all who enter.

See the chefs prepare your goodies through the kitchens open glass windows and marvel at the specialist wrapper as she expertly twists her way through countless gyoza (over 10,000 were wrapped on opening weekend).

It’s been dubbed a beer stadium due to the array of Japanese craft beer on tap, several of which are distributed through huge, colourful Yoyogi vats perched behind the bar. Feeling adventurous? Give a frozen beer a try! It’s Kirin circulated through a frozen cylinder to create a foam which is then added to a regular beer. Magic.

Now to the menu. As you’d imagine, gyoza is the game changer here. Poached or grilled and with choices of pork and kimchi, three cheese and lemongrass chicken to name just a few, they’re cooked to perfection; juicy and melt-in-your-mouth.

In an interesting spin, you can opt for open gyoza where the casing is deep fried and crunchy and topped with a choice of pork belly, smoked salmon or tofu, taco-style.

If you’re feeling extra peckish go for a Salmon Sashimi Poke Bowl, Chicken Katsu Curry Don or Chicken Ramen bowl.

With four venues in Brisbane and one in Sydney, the Harajuku Gyoza good vibes are as infectious as the food is delicious and the Gold Coast restaurant is no exception.

Set yourself up in a booth inside or sprawl out in the outdoor dining area and watch Broadbeach roll by.

Inside tip: order sake to sip on and watch the spectacle unfold.

LOCATION: Broadbeach Mall, Oasis Shopping Centre (opposite the stage), Broadbeach

HOURS: Thursday to Monday 7am to 11pm and Tuesday/Wednesday 11am to 11pm.

Beachside Pavilion

It’s a seafood extravaganza at Beachside Pavilion, the latest addition in a long line of recently revamped spaces in the Broadbeach Mall.

Formerly Alto Cucina & Bar, at the beach end of the foodie strip, the restaurant has been transformed into a bright, airy eatery with a street side terrace area and decked out in suitably cheery beach theme.

With an emphasis on fresh seafood, Beachside Pavilion has brought a unique menu to Broadbeach inspired by their close proximity to one of our most popular beaches.

To start, try the cooked-to-perfection Oven Baked Scallops on the shell with spiced tomato cream, wakame, sesame seeds and fish roe. If you love raw fish go for the Hiramasa Kingfish Ceviche with rockmelon, coriander, red onion, lime and radish.

For a lighter main the Ocean Trout Poke Bowl with quinoa, avocado, radish, sesame seaweed, edamame, red onion, spinach and kewpie is perfectly fresh and oh-so good for you.

Of course if you’re after the cooked variety, there are plenty of options. Try the Baked Whole Snapper with lemon, mustard, olive oil, dill, chips and a mixed leaf salad or Squid Ink Orzo Pasta with blue swimmer crab, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, scampi bisque and chilli.

If you’re out for a special occasion don’t think about ordering anything other than Beachside Pavilion’s Signature Chilli Mud Crab. It’s served with tomato, coconut cream, egg, coriander, special tomato chilli sauce and charred sourdough. It’s everything good about going out for dinner.

Beachside Pavilion is the perfect casual dining space, just a short stroll from the beach and with a soon-to-be-opened takeaway area, perfect for when you need a quick bite before heading back to the sand.
